1. WHAT INFORMATION DO WE COLLECT?
Personal information you disclose to us
In Short: We collect personal information that you voluntarily provide to us.
We collect personal information that you voluntarily provide to us when you:
- Leave a comment on a blog post
- Subscribe to receive updates about new blog posts
- Contact us through our contact form or by email
- Otherwise interact with us
Personal Information Provided by You. The personal information we collect depends on the context of your interactions with us. It may include the following:
- Name (or username/alias used when commenting)
- Email address
- Website URL (optional, when leaving comments)
- Message content (when you contact us or comment)
Sensitive Information. We do not process sensitive information.
All personal information that you provide to us must be true, complete, and accurate, and you must notify us of any changes to such personal information.
Information automatically collected
In Short: Some information — such as your Internet Protocol (IP) address and browser characteristics — is collected automatically when you visit our Services.
We automatically collect certain information when you visit, use, or navigate the Services. This information does not reveal your specific identity (like your name or contact information) but may include:
- Log and Usage Data. Information our servers automatically record in log files, such as your IP address, browser type and version, operating system, language preferences, referring URLs, pages viewed, and the date and time of your visit. This information is primarily needed to maintain the security and operation of our Services.
- Device Data. Information about the device you use to access our Services, such as browser type, device type, and hardware model. This is standard technical information that most websites collect.
- Approximate Location Data. We may derive an approximate location (country, region, or city) from your IP address for analytics purposes. We do not use GPS or any other precise location tracking technologies.
Like many websites, we also collect some information through cookies and similar technologies — primarily for basic website functionality and anonymous analytics. See Section 5 for details.
2. HOW DO WE PROCESS YOUR INFORMATION?
In Short: We process your information to operate our blog, respond to your comments and inquiries, send new blog posts to subscribers, maintain security, and comply with applicable law.
We process your personal information for the following reasons:
- To publish and manage comments. When you leave a comment on a blog post, we process your name, email, and comment content to display the comment and prevent spam.
- To send you new blog posts (only if you subscribe). If you provide your email address to receive updates about new posts, we will manually send you occasional emails with links to new content. We do not use automated email marketing services, and we do not send promotional or advertising emails. You can unsubscribe at any time by replying to any email with “unsubscribe” or by contacting us directly.
- To respond to your inquiries. When you contact us through our contact form or by email, we use your contact information to respond to your questions.
- To improve and secure our Services. We analyze how our Services are used (through anonymous analytics) to improve content, fix problems, and protect against fraud or abuse.
- To comply with law. We may process your information where we believe it is necessary to comply with legal obligations.
3. WHAT LEGAL BASES DO WE RELY ON TO PROCESS YOUR INFORMATION?
In Short: We only process your personal information when we believe it is necessary and we have a valid legal reason to do so under applicable law.
If you are located in the EU or UK, this section applies to you.
The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and UK GDPR require us to explain the valid legal bases we rely on in order to process your personal information. As such, we may rely on the following legal bases:
- Consent. We process your information with your consent — for example, when you voluntarily leave a comment or subscribe to blog updates. You can withdraw your consent at any time.
- Legitimate Interests. We may process your information when we believe it is reasonably necessary to achieve our legitimate interests, such as:
- Analyzing how our Services are used to improve them
- Diagnosing technical problems and preventing spam or fraudulent activities
- Maintaining basic website security
- Legal Obligations. We may process your information where necessary to comply with legal obligations, such as responding to lawful requests from public authorities.
- Vital Interests. We may process your information where necessary to protect someone’s vital interests, such as in situations involving potential threats to safety.
If you are located in Canada, this section applies to you.
We process your information based on your express consent (for example, when you actively submit a comment or subscribe) or implied consent (for example, when you voluntarily visit our website). You can withdraw your consent at any time by contacting us.
In some exceptional cases, Canadian privacy law permits processing without consent, for example:
- For investigations and fraud detection and prevention
- If disclosure is required to comply with a subpoena, warrant, or court order
- If the information is publicly available and is specified by the regulations
- If the collection is solely for journalistic, artistic, or literary purposes
- For identifying injured, ill, or deceased persons and communicating with next of kin
4. WHEN AND WITH WHOM DO WE SHARE YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION?
In Short: We may share information with service providers who help us operate the blog. We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for advertising purposes.
The categories of third parties we may share personal information with are:
- Website Hosting Service Providers (our hosting company, which stores the website and its data)
- Data Analytics Services (to understand how visitors use our blog, anonymously where possible)
- Spam Prevention Services (to help filter spam comments)
We have agreements in place with these service providers, which are designed to help safeguard your personal information. They cannot use your personal information for their own purposes and must protect it according to our instructions.
We also may need to share your personal information in the following situations:
- Legal Obligations. We may disclose your information where required by law, such as in response to a court order, subpoena, or legal request.
- Business Transfers. In the unlikely event of a merger, acquisition, or transfer of the blog to another owner, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. You will be notified if this happens.
We do not sell your personal information. We do not share your information with advertisers. We do not engage in targeted advertising or retargeting.
5. DO WE USE COOKIES AND OTHER TRACKING TECHNOLOGIES?
In Short: We use a limited number of cookies to keep the website functional and to analyze usage anonymously.
We use cookies and similar tracking technologies for the following purposes:
- Essential cookies — required for basic website functionality (such as remembering your comment form inputs or managing session security). These cannot be disabled.
- Analytics cookies — help us understand how visitors use our blog so we can improve content and fix problems. We use this information in an aggregated and anonymous way where possible.
We do not use cookies for advertising, retargeting, or profiling.
You can control cookies through your browser settings. Most browsers allow you to refuse cookies or delete existing ones. Please note that disabling certain cookies may affect some features of the Services.
Specific information about how we use such technologies and how you can refuse certain cookies is set out in our Cookie Notice (if applicable) and in our cookie consent banner.
Google Analytics
We may use Google Analytics to understand how visitors interact with our blog. Google Analytics collects information such as how often users visit the site, what pages they view, and what other sites they used prior to coming to our site. We use the information only to improve our blog. Google Analytics collects only the IP address assigned to you on the date you visit this site, rather than your name or other identifying information.
To opt out of being tracked by Google Analytics across all websites, visit https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout. For more information on the privacy practices of Google, please visit the Google Privacy & Terms page.
6. IS YOUR INFORMATION TRANSFERRED INTERNATIONALLY?
In Short: Yes. Our servers are located in the Netherlands, and your information may be processed there and in other countries.
Our servers are hosted in the Netherlands. Regardless of your location, please be aware that your information may be transferred to, stored by, and processed by us in our hosting facilities in the Netherlands and in the facilities of the third parties with whom we share your personal information (see Section 4), which may include facilities in the European Union, United States, Canada, and other countries.
If you are located outside the Netherlands, please be aware that the data protection laws in the destination country may differ from those in your country. However, we will take all necessary measures to protect your personal information in accordance with this Privacy Notice and applicable law.
European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses
Where we transfer personal information from the European Economic Area (EEA) or United Kingdom (UK) to countries that have not been deemed to provide an adequate level of data protection, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses, which require recipients to protect personal information in accordance with European data protection laws.
7. HOW LONG DO WE KEEP YOUR INFORMATION?
In Short: We keep your information for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes outlined in this Privacy Notice unless otherwise required by law.
We will only keep your personal information for as long as it is necessary for the purposes set out in this Privacy Notice, unless a longer retention period is required or permitted by law. Specifically:
- Comments are retained indefinitely (or until you request deletion) so that the conversation thread remains intact.
- Subscriber email addresses are retained until you unsubscribe or request deletion.
- Contact form messages are typically retained for up to 1 year after the conversation ends.
- Server logs and analytics data are retained for shorter periods as set by our hosting and analytics providers.
When we have no ongoing legitimate business need to process your personal information, we will either delete or anonymize such information, or, if this is not possible (for example, because your personal information has been stored in backup archives), then we will securely store your personal information and isolate it from any further processing until deletion is possible.
8. HOW DO WE KEEP YOUR INFORMATION SAFE?
In Short: We aim to protect your personal information through a system of organizational and technical security measures.
We have implemented appropriate and reasonable technical and organizational security measures designed to protect the security of any personal information we process. These include secure hosting, HTTPS encryption, and access controls.
However, despite our safeguards and efforts to secure your information, no electronic transmission over the Internet or information storage technology can be guaranteed to be 100% secure, so we cannot promise or guarantee that hackers, cybercriminals, or other unauthorized third parties will not be able to defeat our security. Although we will do our best to protect your personal information, transmission of personal information to and from our Services is at your own risk. You should only access the Services within a secure environment.
9. DO WE COLLECT INFORMATION FROM MINORS?
In Short: We do not knowingly collect data from or market to children under 18 years of age.
We do not knowingly collect, solicit data from, or market to children under 18 years of age. By using the Services, you represent that you are at least 18, or that you are the parent or guardian of such a minor and consent to such minor dependent’s use of the Services.
If we learn that personal information from users under 18 years of age has been collected, we will take reasonable measures to promptly delete such data from our records. If you become aware of any data we may have collected from children under age 18, please contact us at info@explorercanada.ca.

If you have questions or comments about your privacy rights, you may email us at info@explorercanada.ca.
11. CONTROLS FOR DO-NOT-TRACK FEATURES
Most web browsers and some mobile operating systems and mobile applications include a Do-Not-Track (“DNT”) feature or setting you can activate to signal your privacy preference not to have data about your online browsing activities monitored and collected. At this stage, no uniform technology standard for recognizing and implementing DNT signals has been finalized. As such, we do not currently respond to DNT browser signals. If a standard for online tracking is adopted that we must follow in the future, we will inform you about that practice in a revised version of this Privacy Notice.
